3 Weeks… 21 Days…504 Hours…4320 Minutes

Don\'t Stop Thinking about Tomorrow

So you may be wondering what the count down is for… Let me tell you. That is the countdown until graduation. At this exact hour, 3 weeks, 21 days, 504 hours, and 4,320 minutes from now, I will be an APSU alumni. I look back on my four years here at APSU and can not believe it is already over. All the hard classes, the horrible tests I studied for and the stressful days of making sure I have enough money to live comfortably are easily forgotten by all the late night study breaks at Taco Bell, the random road trips with friends, fraternity and sorority formals and just good times with your friends. I’ve pondered lately about the overall theme of my college career, and it can all be summed up by a song that I was introduced to by a mentor, at my Freshman convocation.

Okay… now, watch the video link above, if you haven’t already.

Watched it? Good…

I think it is important to pass along useful pieces of advice that have been obtained over the past few years. As a mentor of mine told me, and Fleetwood Mac says best, “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” I know, most of you, including myself, were not even a thought in our parents minds when this song was popular. That’s okay. It’s oldie, but a goodie.

When times get tough, and you are frustrated with your all nighters, a negative balance in your bank account (I suggest calling your parents for more money, or give plasma.. its good money!), not being able to decide what to major in, or thinking that graduation will never come, just listen to Fleetwood Mac. Never loose the vision of the prize. Nothing worth having, comes at a cheap, or easy price. You have to work hard and be diligent in your studies and behaviors. The end will come, and you will look back and think, “Wow, Where the heck did time go?”

The past 4 years have been some of the best times of my life and I will miss all the memories and friends. I have enjoyed my time at APSU, but all good things must come to an end. It doesn’t mean life is ending, but thats it’s time to make even better memories!

Until next time…

On the Home Stretch

March 24th, 2009 by caleb

Since the last time I wrote you… Spring Break has come and gone. Last time, I was trying to decide what I was going to do for spring break. I am going to give you the break down of my trip. The break started something like this… sitting in Clarksville with my friend Brandon, because everyone else had either gone to Florida or home for the break. Our friend Jeff was in Boston for a few days. He called us on Saturday night and asked if we wanted to go to Florida on Sunday, when he got back from Boston. So… we packed up and met him when he got off the plane around 1am Monday morning and we went to Florida! We drove all night, arrived in Panama City somewhere around 9am and went to the beach and slept!
I have to say, it was worth the trip. We had a great time! It was one of the best weeks of fun I have had in college. It was not too incredibly wild (although Girls Gone Wild WAS indeed there!). There were university vs university contests at the hotel we were staying at. Austin Peay dominated in many of those contests! MTV was in town, Lil Wayne played one day, Kenny Chesney played one day, there was free stuff being handed out everywhere. The weather was perfect… mid 70s everyday, sunny, a little breeze. Could not have asked for anything better.

Other stuff going on at Austin Peay outside of Spring Break, our Mens Basketball team came in 2nd place in the OVC. We lost in a close double overtime against Moorehead State. It was close, but a good game. We had a lot of Austin Peay supporters show up to the game. Our Women’s basketball team won the OVC and played Duke on Sunday. We unfortunately did not win but the women still deserve big ups for making it as far as we did!

Also right after Spring Break we had Tacky Prom. Tacky Prom is a tradition at APSU. The idea behind Tacky Prom is to look as disguisting as humanly possible and show up to a “prom type” event. The theme this year was “Revenge of the Nerds.” I am including some pictures of the past few events that have been going on. You will see some of us dressed up pretty crazy.

Its that time of year, to begin applying for school and deciding where high school students are going to go to college next year. I suggest that everyone look at more than one school and see what you are wanting in your college experience. In your schools, you should give Austin Peay a chance. I think you would really enjoy it.

The best advice I can give anyone looking for their school is that you get out of college, what you put into it. If you remember that when you are looking at schools, it will make it a little easier to appreciate what you see on the surface at each school! Good luck to everyone!

Until next time….

Spring Break is Near!

February 16th, 2009 by caleb

Hey everyone.. It’s already week 6 of school! This semester is flying by, just as fast, if not faster than all of the rest. I have some very difficult classes this semester but two of them are 8 week, online classes, which means, I am done with them after Spring Break! Speaking of Spring Break… It’s near! Spring Break is the time of year, every college student looks forward to. Spring Break means 2 things… 1. The semester is half over. 2. It’s time for a week of fun and as little (if any) studying as possible. Of course there are those spring break locations where “Girls Gone Wild” and “College Students Unleashed” are going to be filmed…. but, there are tons of options. Right now, I am in the process of figuring out where I am going to go. My freshman year on Spring Break, I went Skydving for the first time. My Sophomore year, I was moving into my apartment so I spent the week driving and moving furniture from home and family’s houses to Clarksville.

This year, I want to do something fun. My roommate is going to be in Guatemala for 2 weeks on a mission trip, so I have to find something to do. Here are some of my options…
1. The good ole stand by… Florida! – The typical college spring break. I have never been on SB in FL… I might want to go down there and enjoy some warm weather.
2. Skydiving Again…. All my talk of how much fun it was has made some of my friends want to go.
3. The University Rec. office is taking a trip to go Canoeing and Camping in the Everglades…
4. Or… the 4th option.. The Student Life Office is taking a trip to Georgia to do some service work and take a few days to just relax.
5. The final option… Stay home, save some money and hang out with the friends that don’t go anywhere for break.

The options are there… I’ll let you know what I decide. Until next time…

[caption id="attachment_7" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="The Theme was "Let the Good Times Roll""]The Theme was "Let the Good Times Roll"[/caption]Its here… the big week that most college students love but hate… that is Finals Week! We all love it because we know its the end of the semester but we all hate it because we know it means we have to study non stop! Finals week is full of late nights to the library, late night study breaks to taco bell, all day studying on days when you don’t have finals, and most importantly procrastination and enjoying hanging out with your friends.
I just got back to Clarksville last night from being home for the Thanksgiving break. It was so nice to go home and see all of my family and eat lots of food. I know I ate way too much, I am sick of eating. I told my grandmother I didn’t want any dessert and she handed me an entire pie and a fork and told me I needed to eat it. Like most grandmothers, she thought I had looked like I had been “starving myself” haha. There is not better feeling that going home for the holidays and your family thinking you are not capable of feeding yourself!
Well, its about time for me to get on some homework and get some fraternity paperwork done. Just like with school, the end of the semester for student organizations is busy as well. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Like I promised, I am going to post some pictures from our homecoming float. We won again this year so I was very excited about that!

Until next time…

Homecoming Week!

October 24th, 2008 by caleb

It’s Homecoming week here at APSU! Homecoming week means that there is something fun to do everyday this week.. between chili cook off’s and pep rallys and Three 6 Mafia in concert, its a fun week! Last night was the Three 6 Mafia concert. I think everyone had a really good time chillin with Juicy J and DJ Paul. Homecoming week also means float building. If you have every built a float before, you know it is tons of tissue paper rolling and sticking small little balls on cardboard and chicken wire. Its so tedious but so much fun. My fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, teamed up with Chi Omega Women’s Fraternity to build the float this year. Luckily, we have around 125 total people to help build the float, but still it’s exhausting. I was working on the float until 4am this morning; however I still made it up in time for my 8am class… Impressive? I think so! P.S. – I’m really tired!
Last weekend my fraternity elected new executive committee positions; I was chosen as the new President. I am really looking forward to this oppurtunity. I take offical office 1 week from this Sunday. I think it’s going to be a great way to serve as a leader and work on my leadership skills. Even though it is going to be lots of hard work, I do not doubt it will be worth it!
Classes are going pretty well this semester, they are challenging but not impossible. I took the hardest test I have taken thus far in college last week. I ended up doing much better than I expected. The class average was only a 52… thats a pretty difficult test!
Well… I still have a float to finish building before the big parade tomorrow at 4:00. We have won the float competition the past 13 years.. the pressure is on! I will take pictures and next time I blog will show you what some of the floats looked like.

Until next time…

Time is Flying By!

September 14th, 2008 by caleb

Hello eveyone! My name is Caleb Roberts. I am a Junior Corporate Communications major with a leadership studies minor. I was born and raised in Greenbrier, TN. I graduated from Greenbrier High School in 2006. This is my first time blogging so… welcome to my life! I’m going to keep everyone updated on what is going on these days. I’m going to go ahead and tell you a few things about me so you will know what its going on when I talk about it. I am very involved on campus, I am the Vice President of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, I am a Governors Ambassador, Peer Mentor Leader, Orientation Assistant and the PR and Marketing Chairman for Dance Marathon (A charity event for Childrens Miracle Network), you will hear more about that when it gets closer! This summer I worked as the Asst. Pool Manager at the Clarksville Country Club. During the school year, I work scholarship hours in the student affairs office.
First off, I want to say, time is flying by! I can not believe I am already a junior in college. It seemes like yesterday I was just starting my first day at Austin Peay! It has been so much fun, I think i’m a little sad that time is going as fast as it is. On a more present time, tomorrow is the first day of our 4th week of school! This semester has been so much fun so far. Last week was sorority recruitment week and also the first home football game… Sadly, we lost our first home football game, but the tailgating before was worth being at the game! Next week is a big week for all of the IFC Fraternities on campus. It is recruitment week. Recruitment week is a fun week when guys who are interested in joining a fraternity get to “sample” each fraternity to find out where they fit the best. At the end of the week you can choose whether you want to join a fraternity or not. If you are interested or thinking about going Greek, you should check out our Greek life website at.. www.apsugreeks.com.
Last week, I started my first internship. I am required to do one internship for my major, and one internship for my minor. I am currently doing my leadership minor internship at Regions Bank here in Clarksville. I am working with the bank president and other branch managers, giving myself oppurtunities to see different styles of leadership. It is a great learning experience! I have already learned so much; I know I will be able to put to use in the future.
Like I said earlier, this is the start of the 4th week of school… The 4th week of school = test/assignments due. The first few weeks of school are not too busy, but this week is a busy week with tests and papers and different assignments due all week. On that note… I am about to go start writing a commerical for my media relations course!

Until next time…
